7 Billion & Me

Campaign Website and Information Graphics for United Nations

The world’s population topped seven billion people in October 2011. To mark this historic, global event, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) launched a global movement called 7 Billion Actions to inspire change by highlighting positive actions individuals and organizations can take that will make a difference around the world.

Carousel30 worked closely with UNFPA to create the 7 Billion & Me website, an important piece of the larger campaign. UNFPA identified the need to personalize the campaign on the individual level, which is the objective of this site.

7_Billion_and_MeHow does a population of 7 billion people relate to me? Where do I fall in this mix? Those questions are answered by the 7 Billion & Me site, which was created to illustrate people’s place in the world relative to their time of birth.

It was designed and developed by Carousel30 using meticulous calculations provided by the UNFPA team. Users input key facts about themselves and the site reveals several ways he or she fits into the world’s population of 7 billion people. It provides facts and figures such as how many people were born before you globally or how many people were born in your hometown after you, among other interesting statistics. The site also features a real time population clock.

This data, combined with infographics designed by our Creative team, form a unique experience for every user of the site. Every person is able to see world statistics calculated specifically for him or her.

Within 24 hours of the website's launch, the site received over 70,000 unique visits. On October 27, 2011, BBC World News covered the launch of the 7 Billion and Me website. View the article here.

About the 7 Billion Actions Campaign
On October 31 2011, the world population reaches 7 billion. A world of this size poses many challenges and countless opportunities to make a positive difference. This unique moment in human history will have an impact on every single person on the planet. A world of seven billion has implications for sustainability, urbanization, access to health services, and youth empowerment–however, it also offers a rare call-to-action opportunity to renew global commitment for a healthy and sustainable world.

As the United Nations agency responsible for marking this milestone, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is leading an innovative global campaign called 7 Billion Actions to build awareness around the opportunities and challenges of a world of seven billion people. UNFPA has enlisted a wide group of corporations, organizations and individuals to deliver this unique initiative, using online, mobile and offline actions to tell the story of the people behind the number.

7 Billion Actions aims to achieve two key objectives:

  • Build global awareness around the opportunities and challenges associated with a world of seven billion people; and
  • Inspire governments, NGOs, private sector, media, academia and individuals to take actions that will have a socially positive impact.
